Josh Heupel has parlayed his offensive success at Tennessee into some top-flight recruiting at the quarterback position. The Vols signed Nico Iamaleava, a five-star prospect from California, in the 2023 cycle and on Thursday landed a commitment from Jake Merklinger, a top-100 recruit in the Class of 2024. Merklinger, who plays at the Calvary Day School in Savannah, Ga., is ranked the No. 55 overall prospect and the No. 6 quarterback in the 247Sports Composite.
He picked the Vols over North Carolina, Georgia and Michigan State.
Tennessee now has six commitments in its 2024 class that ranks No. 6 nationally. Five of the six commitments are blue-chip prospects.
