Like his Ohio State teammates, C.J. Stroud worked out Wednesday in a red Nike athletic shirt customized for the Buckeyes’ pro day.

But after Stroud had gone through a scripted series of throws meant to showcase both what he does well and what he’s still working on, the quarterback who’s in play for the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft was reminded of another shirt.

It was a T-shirt Stroud’s dad gave him when he was 5 or 6 in southern California, one that looks prescient 15 years later.

“It’s been a dream of mine for a very, very long time,” Stroud said of being the No. 1 pick. “My dad used to make me wear a first-round draft pick, first pick in the draft shirt. It was either basketball or football, one of the two. But he set that foundation early on and I definitely want to accomplish that.

“But if not, I just want to go to whoever really loves me not only as a football player, but as a man of God and a man of the community.”

Kim Stroud remembers the shirt — and the athletic prowess her son demonstrated at a ridiculously young age.
