Danny O’Neil had been on Colorado’s campus for only a few hours. He already had a quick meeting with coach Deion Sanders before going out to lunch with a few Buffaloes assistants. On the way back from the meal, the magnitude of the situation really hit him.

The car drove through the beautiful Colorado campus. Out the window he spotted a large, brick fraternity house. Hanging off the roof was a bed sheet with three names spray-painted on it: Gage Ginther, Aaron Butler and Danny O’Neil. That was a wish list of recruits the fraternity wanted to see come change Colorado football.

As the car drove past the house, hip-hop blared as a group of fraternity brothers waved another bed sheet with Sanders’ motto for Buffaloes football.

“It was definitely a cool experience to see the school is backing the team and knows what’s best for them,” O’Neil told The Athletic on Wednesday. “That means bringing in some highly rated recruits. It’s cool to see that everyone is all in on football there.”

O’Neil is a three-star quarterback who plays at Indianapolis Cathedral. He is rated the No. 572 player and No. 33 QB in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite. He was hand-picked by Sanders — known as Coach Prime — and offensive coordinator Sean Lewis to be the program’s quarterback of the future.
